Rare Ltd. (known simply as Rare) is a British video game development studio founded by two brothers—Tim and Chris Stamper.
Rare is known for making a variety of games, most notably for the Nintendo 64 and later the Xbox. Some of the company's most well-known titles are the Donkey Kong (starting with Donkey Kong Country), Banjo-Kazooie series, Viva Piñata, and Conker series; GoldenEye 007; and Sea of Thieves. The company is currently a subsidiary of Xbox Game Studios, but has also developed games for the Nintendo DS.
Rare is also known for its numerous cameos and references to other Rare games.
Rare's first game was Vs. Slalom for the arcades in 1986. Rare's logos have changed over the years (from their Designs on the Future logo during the NES years to their current logo unveiled in 2015). Banjo and Kazooie are two of Rare's most well known characters, along with others like Conker the Squirrel, Joanna Dark, and the Battletoads. The Donkey Kong IP was never owned by Rare, so when Rare went to Microsoft, Donkey Kong stayed with Nintendo but Rare continued to develop a few more games under the IP. Microsoft had paid $375 million USD in 2002 for 100% of the company.
